Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has provided clarification regarding his interactions with the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. In a statement released on Wednesday, titled “Our Engagement with General Abacha: Setting the Record Straight,” Obi explained that his meeting with Abacha was not political in nature, as he had never met the former leader prior to this encounter.
Obi included a copy of the official letter documenting his co-option, along with other traders and importers, into the Taskforce on Port Decongestion. He stated that the meeting stemmed from shared concerns among traders and importers about prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports. Obi emphasized that they approached Abacha as concerned citizens seeking practical solutions to address issues affecting economic activity and livelihoods, rather than as political figures.
The objective of the meeting was to advocate for efficiency and propose steps to restore order and productivity at the nation’s ports. Obi reiterated that their actions were driven solely by a sense of civic duty and not political ambition, offering this clarification in the interest of truth.
