The Oyo State Government has dropped all charges against Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The trio had faced legal action following a tragic stampede at a children’s event in December 2024, which resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children.
After a court session on Thursday, the defendants appeared visibly relieved, smiling and exchanging pleasantries, indicating that the charges had been dismissed. Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, confirmed the development, explaining the rationale behind the court’s decision.
Aikomo stated, “It was an unfortunate incident that led to the death of many. Whenever death occurs under unnatural circumstances, the law takes its course. The state initially filed charges against those implicated in the investigation. However, as we proceeded, the affected parties showed empathy and compassion, which influenced our decision.”
He emphasized that the essence of prosecution is not to punish but to seek justice. The decision to withdraw the charges was made in the interest of justice, leading to their dismissal by the court. The defendants are now free of all charges.
