In a startling revelation, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, disclosed that more than 40% of Nigerian Army personnel currently lack adequate housing. This statement was made during the commissioning of the newly constructed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Lt. Gen. Oluyede highlighted that addressing the accommodation crisis was one of the critical issues raised upon his assumption of office. He noted that the newly commissioned barracks, which represent only phases one and two of a larger plan, will provide some relief but are insufficient to meet the extensive housing needs of the army.
The new barracks are designed to accommodate a total of 614 personnel, including quarters for Major Generals, Brigadier Generals, and family accommodations for various ranks. The facilities also include three worship centers, sports amenities, and essential infrastructure such as a perimeter fence and access road networks.
Despite the significant investment in the new barracks, Lt. Gen. Oluyede emphasized that this project only scratches the surface of the accommodation shortfall faced by the Nigerian Army in Abuja. He described the new facilities as “just a drop in the ocean” compared to the ongoing housing challenges.
The army’s accommodation crisis underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to improve living conditions for personnel. As the Nigerian Army continues to address these challenges, the focus remains on enhancing support for those who serve the nation.
