A wave of panic has swept through the Oba community in Anambra State following the demolition of the Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, also known as La Cruise Hotel. This action was taken after a newly established security outfit discovered over 30 graves and a shrine at the hotel, which authorities allege was a hub for kidnappers.

The hotel, located along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, was demolished on Saturday after receiving a tip-off from a whistleblower and gathering intelligence about its illicit activities. During the operation, security personnel found the graves, military camouflage, and various arms and cartridges within the premises.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any bodies were recovered from the graves or if any arrests were made during the operation. Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Community Security, declined to comment when approached for details but directed inquiries to the governor’s Press Secretary.

A statement from the Anambra State New Media X (formerly Twitter) confirmed the hotel’s ties to criminal activities, stating, “The hotel has well-partitioned graves of over 30 on the last floor with a shrine!!”

Christian Aburime, the governor’s Press Secretary, stated that investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided. He emphasized that the demolition aligns with Anambra State’s Homeland Security Law, which mandates the destruction of structures linked to criminal activities.

During a visit to the community, residents expressed mixed reactions. While some were outraged by the hotel’s activities and supported the demolition, others called for a thorough investigation before such drastic measures were taken. One resident remarked, “I witnessed the demolition. This is beyond comprehension. God forbid such evil in our land!” In contrast, another suggested that the so-called graves might have been partitions for fish ponds.

In a separate incident, the Agunechemba Security Squad raided a nearby brothel in Akwu-Ukwu Oba, arresting two suspected kidnappers and five prostitutes. The one-storey building was also demolished under the Anambra State’s Agunechemba Security Laws after it was identified as another hotspot for criminal activity.

An operative involved in the raid indicated that some gang members remain at large but vowed to track them down.
