The coalition of opposition lawmakers in Nigeria has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his adherence to a Supreme Court judgment, despite provocations from the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is led by Martins Amaaewhule.
During a live press conference, the opposition coalition expressed discontent over the denial of access to Governor Fubara when he attempted to present the state’s 2025 budget at the Assembly on Wednesday. The lawmakers, loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, have been holding proceedings at the Assembly.
Spokesperson for the coalition, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, highlighted the governor’s invitation to pro-Wike lawmakers for a meeting aimed at resolving existing conflicts for the benefit of Rivers people. Ugochinyere noted that the lawmakers ignored this invitation, indicating a refusal to cooperate despite Fubara’s goodwill gestures.
“After receiving the judgment, the governor invited the lawmakers to a meeting to discuss important matters, including a suitable meeting space for the Assembly and the payment of outstanding allowances. Unfortunately, they declined to attend,” Ugochinyere stated.
The spokesperson commended Fubara’s humility and courage in complying with the Supreme Court ruling that required him to recognize lawmakers who had defected from their party. The judgment, according to Ugochinyere, reaffirmed Fubara’s commitment to governance and his willingness to work towards peace in the state, despite facing escalating tensions.
Ugochinyere emphasized the contrast between Fubara’s approach and that of his predecessor, noting, “Wike has been the aggressor from day one. We commend Governor Fubara for his adherence to the court judgment and for reaching out to Assembly members with genuine intentions for collaboration.”
