The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90.
Family sources confirmed that the revered monarch died peacefully in the early hours of Monday, just days after celebrating his milestone birthday and the first anniversary of his reign.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne following the passing of his predecessor, Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun, and was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024.
Although palace authorities and the state government are yet to issue an official statement, tributes have begun pouring in from dignitaries and citizens alike. Among the early mourners is former Oyo APC governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin, who described the late monarch as “an esteemed royal father” and offered prayers for the people of Ibadan.
Oba Olakulehin’s passing marks the end of a short but impactful reign, remembered for its deep cultural symbolism and the unity he fostered within Ibadanland.
