Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has advocated for the creation of additional states in the South-East region to rectify the geopolitical imbalance in Nigeria. He made this statement during a meeting with the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution in Abakaliki.
Nwifuru emphasized that only the South-East, with its five states, lacks adequate representation among the six geopolitical zones, which could foster resentment. He urged the National Assembly to address structural imbalances constitutionally.
The Governor also proposed rotating the presidency among the six zones for equity, highlighting that the South-East has not held the presidential office since 1999. Additionally, he called for constitutional immunity for key legislative leaders and support for establishing state police, dismissing concerns about potential misuse by governors.
