The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has suspended its nationwide warning strike, which was set to end next Tuesday. Assistant Secretary-General Chidi Aligwe confirmed the decision during a virtual meeting of the NANNM National Executive Council.
The strike was initially called to address several demands, including an upward review of shift allowances, adjustments to uniform allowances, and a separate salary structure for nurses. The union had previously disclaimed a statement by the Coordinating Minister of Health suggesting that the strike had already been called off.
In a circular confirming the suspension, NANNM expressed appreciation for the federal government’s positive steps toward addressing their demands, particularly regarding timelines for implementation. The circular also directed state councils to mobilize members for immediate duty resumption and ensured that no member would face victimization for participating in the strike.
The decision to suspend the strike follows extensive discussions with various government stakeholders to address the nurses’ concerns.
