The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced that by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first tenure, no judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be living in a rented apartment. This statement was made during the flag-off for the design and construction of residences for Heads of Courts of the FCT.

Wike emphasized that the era of judges residing in rented quarters would come to an end, highlighting the government’s commitment to providing adequate housing for judicial officers. He clarified that the construction of these residences is part of a broader initiative that includes the recent development of new magistrate courts in Jabi and the construction of 40 judges’ quarters in Katampe District.

The minister assured that these accommodations would not interfere with the judiciary’s independence, stating that the Federal Capital Development Authority is responsible for public buildings in the FCT. He further explained that the constructed houses would become the property of the judges upon their retirement, ensuring they have secure and dignified accommodations.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, supported this initiative, noting that providing secure housing will enhance the dignity and operational independence of the judiciary, ultimately reducing corruption.
