The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated preparations for a nationwide protest scheduled for February 4, 2025, in response to the recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs. This decision comes amid rising living costs and is aimed at urging the reversal of what the NLC describes as an “insensitive and unjustifiable” hike.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the mobilization directive during a meeting at Labour House in Abuja, emphasizing that the protest will serve as a warning against the implications of imposing such a steep increase on a struggling population. He pointed out that many Nigerians are already facing economic hardships, including high fuel prices, food costs, and electricity tariffs.
In a communique, Ajaero stated, “The NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally… to express our collective opposition to this arbitrary tariff hike.” He called on all affiliate unions and state councils to prepare for the protest, encouraging civil society groups to join the efforts.
The NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) has condemned the tariff increase as a direct assault on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are coping with ongoing economic challenges. Ajaero urged the federal government, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful discussions to reconsider the tariff adjustment in light of current economic realities.
He warned that if their demands are not addressed, the NLC may escalate actions, including a potential boycott of telecommunication services and additional mass protests, to resist policies that exacerbate poverty and inequality.
The NLC remains committed to advocating for the welfare and dignity of Nigerian workers, urging unity among citizens to oppose economic oppression and corporate profit prioritization over public well-being.
