Nigeria is set to receive an additional $9.5 million (about £7 million) in recovered funds linked to the late former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, from the United Kingdom’s Jersey.
The funds, described as proceeds of tainted property, are part of assets traced to Abacha-era looting between 1993 and 1998. They were held in a bank account in Jersey and remained under legal dispute for several years.
Although the assets were initially identified and recovered during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, prolonged court processes delayed their return to Nigeria. A breakthrough was achieved in December 2025 after Jersey authorities and Nigerian officials signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the repatriation.
The latest agreement builds on earlier arrangements that have already led to the return of over $300 million in recovered Abacha-linked funds to Nigeria.
Authorities say the recovered money will be returned in line with existing asset recovery and management frameworks.
