The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has sharply criticized Nigeria’s political culture, stating that the country now glorifies material wealth at the expense of values, integrity, and public accountability. In an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today,’ Sanusi lamented the erosion of Nigeria’s core value system, emphasizing that corrupt individuals are rewarded with positions of power rather than held accountable.

He remarked that public office has become a means for self-enrichment instead of national service, with those who misappropriate public funds often celebrated rather than condemned. Sanusi pointed out that many individuals define their worth by their material possessions, including property and luxury items, indicating a troubling shift in societal values.

Sanusi warned that the glorification of wealth, regardless of its origins, entrenches a system where impunity thrives and corruption is rewarded. He attributed moral decay in governance to poor upbringing and weak institutions, noting that many public officials enter politics primarily to accumulate wealth.

Reflecting on the legacy of former Head of State General Murtala Muhammed, he called for a moral rebirth in Nigeria, stressing that this responsibility cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the president or governors. He advocated for a comprehensive regeneration of values and emphasized the need to strengthen institutions that uphold accountability and integrity.

Sanusi concluded by highlighting the importance of restoring integrity in public life, warning that without significant change, Nigeria will continue to face challenges rooted in corruption and a lack of accountability.
