Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has condemned President Bola Tinubu for what he sees as a violation of the federal character principle in political appointments. Speaking on Arise TV, Ndume argued that the President’s recent appointments do not reflect the country’s diversity as mandated by Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
Ndume emphasized that this section requires political appointments to be representative of Nigeria’s diverse population. He stated, “The figures are there… the constitution is very clear,” highlighting that the current appointments fail to meet these constitutional requirements.
He urged the President to address these infractions, warning that neglecting them could have future repercussions. Ndume clarified that his remarks are not a personal attack on the President but rather part of his responsibilities as a lawmaker to oversee and point out irregularities in governance.
The senator expressed confidence in his right to voice these concerns, stating, “Each one of us will stand before God… What will we tell our people?” He anticipates backlash for his comments but remains steadfast, reminding that his duty includes advocating for constitutional adherence.
