On Monday, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) announced plans to establish an anti-corruption committee in each of its 130 branches to tackle corruption-related issues effectively. This initiative was revealed by Prof. Babafemi Badejo, the Chairman of the NBA National Anti-Corruption Committee, in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Badejo explained that the NBA National Executive Committee recently passed a motion mandating the formation of these committees across all branches. He stated, “An anti-corruption committee shall be established in all NBA branches to address corruption-related issues within their jurisdictions.”
These committees will collaborate with local stakeholders, including law enforcement, the judiciary, and community organizations, to combat corruption at various levels. The national body will coordinate efforts to ensure a unified approach to anti-corruption across all branches.
Badejo emphasized that the establishment of these committees is a proactive step towards fostering accountability and promoting the rule of law in Nigeria. He noted that the NBA is committed to sending a clear message that corruption is unacceptable and is taking on its expected role as a bastion of accountability.
The NBA, under the leadership of Senior Advocate of Nigeria Mr. Afam Osigwe, had already set up the national anti-corruption committee earlier this year. The branch-level committees will design activities tailored to enhance anti-corruption efforts, reinforcing the NBA’s commitment to promoting integrity and accountability within the legal profession.
