The National Assembly has officially suspended all legislative activities following the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement released on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, announced that plenary sessions and related activities in both chambers have been put on hold until Tuesday, July 22. The decision, he said, was made to honour the former president’s contributions to the country.

“The leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives has directed the immediate suspension of all activities in the National Assembly in respect and honour of the former President,” the statement read.

Lawmakers have been advised to adjust their schedules in order to participate in planned funeral activities. The National Assembly also extended condolences to the Nigerian government, the people of Katsina State, and the late president’s family.

Buhari, who served as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, died in London on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.
