Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, stated that Nigeria’s military intervention in Benin Republic and the recent rescue of 100 abducted students in Niger State exemplify Tinubu’s dedication to upholding democracy and enhancing national security.

In an interview with Arise News, Onanuga emphasized that Nigeria’s prompt response to last week’s attempted coup in Benin was executed at the request of the Beninese authorities. He noted that Nigeria’s actions reinforce its commitment to democracy in both Nigeria and neighboring countries.

Onanuga explained that President Patrice Talon of Benin specifically requested military support, initially asking for fighter jets followed by ground troops to address the coup attempt. He underscored that this intervention aligns with ECOWAS rules and Tinubu’s longstanding advocacy for democratic governance in West Africa.

Addressing concerns about Benin’s acknowledgment of Nigeria’s support, Onanuga asserted that the Beninese government appreciates Nigeria’s assistance. He contrasted the situation in Benin with Nigeria’s internal fight against terrorism, highlighting the complexities of asymmetric warfare in domestic operations.

While confirming the release of the 100 students abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Onanuga expressed hope for the continued safe release of remaining victims. He refrained from discussing specifics about potential ransom payments but confirmed ongoing efforts by security agencies.

He concluded by asserting the government’s commitment to protecting democracy and maintaining national security, emphasizing the resolve of security forces in both Nigeria and the broader subregion.
