The National President of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, has expressed support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding violence in Nigeria, viewing it as a necessary catalyst for action by the Nigerian government. Dr. Pogu criticized the Federal Government for its inability to curb the ongoing killings, describing Trump’s remarks as a significant motivation for authorities to take decisive steps.
In his response, Dr. Pogu highlighted the alarming frequency of attacks in Nigeria, where incidents of mass killings—sometimes involving up to three hundred victims—have become distressingly common. He attributed much of this violence to Islamist and militia groups, pointing out that these attackers are often known entities, such as Boko Haram and Fulani militias.
Dr. Pogu specifically noted the jihadist agenda of these groups, which he claims target communities based on religious and ethnic lines. He emphasized that the violence has persisted for over a decade, affecting both Muslim and Christian populations, but argued that the majority of those appealing for international assistance are Christians.
He characterized Trump’s intervention as a crucial development that has prompted a response from the Nigerian presidency. Dr. Pogu urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action, directing the military to address these security challenges without political hindrances.
On the prospect of foreign troops assisting in Nigeria, Dr. Pogu acknowledged the complexities involved but welcomed the international community’s attention, viewing it as a motivation for the Nigerian government to act decisively.
Moreover, he raised concerns about the coexistence of multiple legal frameworks in Nigeria, particularly the operation of Sharia law in some states, which he believes undermines the country’s constitutional order and security.
Dr. Pogu called on the Federal Government to confront these issues head-on to restore order and protect the rights of all citizens.
