Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has proposed a single term of five or six years for elected officials in Nigeria, suggesting it would enhance governance efficacy compared to the current two-term limit of four years each.
Makinde made this statement during a visit from Muslim leaders after Eid-el-Kabir prayers. He emphasized that a longer single term would allow governments to focus more on their mandates without the distractions of re-election campaigns. The governor noted that his own experience in office has shown that significant time can be lost due to unforeseen events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He called for a constitutional amendment to facilitate this change.
The Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging the Muslim community to exemplify obedience and sacrifice as taught in the Quran, while also supporting the government’s efforts.
