The Nigerian Senate has expressed serious concern over a growing lead-poisoning crisis in Ogijo, a community on the border of Ikorodu (Lagos) and Ogun state.   Describing the situation as a public health emergency, lawmakers highlighted the need for immediate action to save thousands of lives.

The motion, co-sponsored by Senators Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East) and Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), revealed that years of operations by used lead-acid battery recycling factories in Ogijo have led to alarming levels of lead contamination. Reports indicate that residents are suffering from severe health issues, including headaches, memory loss, seizures, and developmental delays in children, which are symptoms linked to chronic lead exposure.

The Senate noted that the Federal Government has started some interventions, including the closure of seven battery-recycling facilities by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. Despite this, lawmakers criticized the continued operation of smelters, which release toxic emissions into residential areas, despite community complaints.

Senators praised the proactive measures taken by the Lagos and Ogun state governments in conducting inspections and raising awareness among residents. However, they expressed alarm that lead processed in Ogijo has entered international supply chains, with minimal accountability from manufacturers.

The Senate reiterated the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect citizens and ensure a safe environment. Following discussions, the Senate resolved to support further enforcement actions, including the shutdown of non-compliant factories and detailed environmental remediation efforts.

Emergency medical teams are to be deployed to Ogijo for toxicology screenings and treatment of affected individuals. Additionally, a National Lead Poisoning Response and Remediation Task Force is to be established, with a focus on stricter compliance for battery-recycling operations.

The Senate described the Ogijo lead poisoning crisis as a preventable tragedy and a wake-up call regarding industrial pollution and regulatory failures in protecting vulnerable communities.
