A student from the National Open University of Nigeria, Michael Coker, tragically passed away after collapsing during an examination at the institution’s Victoria Island study center.

Witnesses report that Coker lay on the floor for over 15 minutes, gasping for breath, as fellow students were allegedly prevented from assisting him by an invigilator. Compounding the situation, response efforts reportedly took too long, with a nurse arriving only after Coker’s condition worsened.

While some students expressed concerns about the invigilator chasing away those attempting to help, others suggested that there might not have been intentional delay and that the invigilator merely wanted to maintain order.

Coker was eventually transported to Bonny Camp Hospital, which later denied rejecting him, stating he was referred due to a need for additional medical resources.

The incident has raised alarm about emergency response protocols during examinations, with students and staff alike urging for better preparedness in case of medical emergencies. Efforts to obtain a formal comment from the university were unsuccessful.
