Hon. Sunday Umeha, a current member of the House of Representatives representing Udi/Ezeagu federal constituency, has defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He made this announcement during a mini-rally in Ibagwa-Aka, Igboeze South local government area, where he was joined by over 1,000 former Labour Party members, including local party structures.

Umeha stated that he attended the rally in support of Chief Joshua Ogbonna, a business mogul and key Labour Party financier, who also defected to the APC. He indicated that a formal event to announce his transition into the APC would occur soon in his home area of Ezeagu.

The lawmaker cited internal divisions within the Labour Party at both national and state levels as a significant factor in his decision to switch parties. He expressed a desire to connect more effectively with the central government and highlighted the benefits of aligning with the APC, noting its achievements in infrastructure within Igbo land.

Chief Uche Nnaji, the APC leader in Enugu State, expressed enthusiasm about the influx of new members, emphasizing the importance of unity to reclaim power from the current ruling party. Enugu State APC Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, highlighted the unprecedented nature of this defection, which he views as a major shift in political dynamics in the state.

As the rally concluded, Ogbonna and other defectors vowed to mobilize grassroots support for the APC, asserting their commitment to vigorous campaign efforts leading up to the 2027 elections.
