In a decisive effort to protect its natural resources, the Kwara State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all forests across the state, effective immediately. This directive follows a high-level meeting chaired by the Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, to address ongoing environmental concerns.

According to a statement from the Press Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Shakirat Muritala, the closure prohibits charcoal manufacturers, sawmillers, and other businesses from accessing the forests for tree-cutting activities. This action aims to facilitate the natural regeneration of forest ecosystems, which have been significantly impacted by human activities.

Commissioner Buge highlighted the detrimental effects of illegal tree-felling, particularly for charcoal production, and the harmful practices of sawmillers who disregard reforestation protocols. “The Forestry Directorate will engage various stakeholders to restore normalcy and protect our forests from depletion,” she stated.

The ministry urges those involved in forestry-related businesses to comply with the restrictions during this closure period, warning that violations will incur penalties as outlined by state law.

As Kwara State takes steps to safeguard its environment, the government emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices to ensure the preservation of its forests for future generations.
