The Kano State Government has firmly rejected a recent report by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) that ranks Kano among the top three states violating press freedom in Nigeria. Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, described the report as misleading, unfounded, and malicious, asserting it reflects the opinions of “armchair analysts.”

Waiya emphasized that the Kano State Government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, categorically rejects the claim, arguing that it does not accurately represent the media freedom practices and civic engagement in the state. He highlighted Kano as one of the most open and media-friendly states in Nigeria, citing the governor’s commitment to promoting press freedom and civic engagement.

The commissioner noted that Governor Yusuf has received multiple awards for being the Most Media-Friendly Governor in Nigeria from various reputable media organizations within his two years in office. These awards reflect the administration’s efforts to maintain an open-door policy and respect for journalists.

Waiya also stated that Kano is working on replicating the Freedom of Information Act to enhance access to information. He pointed out the state’s successful hosting of the First Civil Society Organizations Conference, which facilitated dialogue between the government and civil society.

The state government prides itself on allowing civil society organizations to conduct protests without intimidation, with Governor Yusuf personally engaging with protesters to listen to their grievances. This approach, according to Waiya, underscores the administration’s respect for citizens’ rights to free expression.

In his closing remarks, Waiya called on the Wole Soyinka Centre and similar organizations to ensure professionalism and proper verification before releasing reports that could misrepresent states like Kano. He asserted that the Kano State Government would continue to uphold the principles of free expression and responsible journalism as vital components of democracy and good governance.
