President Bola Tinubu held an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) today at the State House in Abuja. This meeting was convened ahead of the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on December 19, 2025.
Vice President Kashim Shettima explained that the session aimed to grant final approval to the 2026 budget proposals before they are presented to lawmakers. He emphasized that the Council was meeting to “put the stamp of approval” on the budget estimates.
The emergency session followed a previous FEC meeting held on December 3, where key parameters of the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper were reviewed and approved. Shettima noted that a more conservative budgetary production estimate of 1.8 million barrels per day would be adopted for planning purposes.
Attendees included notable figures such as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, along with other ministers and FEC members.
This meeting reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to address budgetary considerations as it moves forward into the new fiscal year.
