The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that by-elections will take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, to fill vacant seats in both the National and State Assemblies. These vacancies have arisen due to various reasons, including resignations, deaths, or court annulments.
During a consultative meeting with political parties held in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, provided details about the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of filling these positions to ensure effective governance and representation.
This announcement comes amidst other significant events in the country. The Islamic New Year has been marked by celebrations, with the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) extending felicitations to Muslims. Additionally, concerns regarding the prolonged strike of primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have been raised by political figures, including Peter Obi.
As the nation prepares for these critical elections, the focus will also be on ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process, which remains a central theme in Nigeria’s political landscape. Further details regarding the elections are expected to be released as the date approaches.
