The new Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has publicly affirmed his northern Nigerian roots in response to questions about his background following his appointment. Speaking to the press, Ojulari emphasized that he is a “child of the North,” born in Ilorin and raised in Kaduna State, where he lived before moving to Zaria for his education. He added that he only began learning Yoruba at the age of 15.

Ojulari called for unity and national support, especially from fellow northerners, to help him succeed in his new role. He stressed that the work ahead requires collective effort and prayers to bring progress to both the region and the country.

Addressing recent tensions between NNPCL and the Dangote Group, Ojulari acknowledged Dangote’s contributions to the sector and said discussions have taken place to mend the relationship. He stated that both parties would collaborate to ensure steady fuel supply in Nigeria and that any future issues would be resolved through dialogue. “You won’t hear of any more clashes between NNPCL and Dangote Refinery,” he assured.

On the topic of falling global crude oil prices, Ojulari explained the negative impact on Nigeria’s revenue, which heavily depends on oil. He said NNPCL is actively working to reduce operational costs and boost revenue despite the price slump.

He also responded to public concerns about the delayed drop in local fuel prices. According to Ojulari, the lag is due to fuel already purchased at earlier, higher prices. However, he noted that future supplies bought at lower prices should result in a gradual reduction in pump prices across the country.
