The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the withdrawal of an invitation extended to the former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, related to a violent incident during the Sallah celebrations in Kano State on March 30, 2025.
Sanusi was initially summoned to explain his involvement in a horse-riding procession after Eid prayers, which the police deemed a breach of prior security arrangements. In a letter dated April 4, 2025, the Commissioner of Police, Olajide Ibitoye, requested Sanusi’s presence at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on April 8.
However, Egbetokun later directed that police operatives obtain Sanusi’s statement discreetly in Kano, following interventions from various stakeholders. This decision reflects the police’s commitment to ensuring that their actions are not politicized or misinterpreted.
Despite an agreement that no Durbar festival would take place to maintain peace, Sanusi participated in a procession, which led to a confrontation resulting in the death of one individual and several injuries. The police condemned this breach of agreement and vowed to continue their investigation impartially.
The initial invitation sparked significant concern among critics, who viewed it as an attempt to escalate tensions in Kano. Civil society groups and traditional institution advocates expressed fears that the police’s actions could destabilize the emirate.
