Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has emphasized that the rate of hunger and poverty in Nigeria is a pressing reality, not just numbers. In a recent post on his X account, Obi highlighted that millions of Nigerians are facing severe food shortages and multidimensional poverty at unprecedented levels.
He noted that the United Nations recently reported that a significant portion of the population will experience acute food insecurity, with a large percentage living in multidimensional poverty. Obi pointed to rising inflation and unemployment, stating that economic mismanagement has nearly eliminated the middle class in Nigeria.
Obi criticized the current leadership for lacking competence and compassion, arguing that effective governance is essential for turning the nation’s fortunes around. He cited Argentina as an example of a country that, despite facing severe economic challenges, managed to reduce its poverty rate through disciplined leadership and sound economic policies.
He urged that Nigeria can also overcome its challenges, but this requires leaders who prioritize the people, manage resources wisely, and reject corruption. Obi expressed optimism that a “New Nigeria” is possible, advocating for focused efforts in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
He concluded by reiterating that genuine change is achievable if leaders commit to tackling corruption and improving governance.
