Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff from the United States, made a grand entrance on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, greeting tens of thousands of pilgrims and well-wishers ahead of his inauguration mass. Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, he assumed the papacy on May 8, 2025.
In a popemobile, he waved to the cheering crowds, smiling and making the sign of the cross. Among the dignitaries attending the inauguration is US Vice President JD Vance, making it a significant occasion for American Catholics.
The inauguration mass, set to commence at 10:00 am (0800 GMT), will be a ceremonial event rich in rites and traditions. During the mass, Pope Leo XIV will receive his papal ring and deliver a homily that will outline his vision for the papacy.
Having spent two decades as a missionary in Peru, the 69-year-old pontiff is relatively unknown to many Catholics. However, in recent meetings with journalists, clergy, and diplomats, he has emphasized themes of peace amidst global conflicts and the importance of social justice. He has also reaffirmed traditional Catholic values, advocating for family structures based on a stable union between a man and a woman and defending the rights of the unborn.
In attendance are notable figures such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alongside a host of other international leaders and dignitaries. Security measures for the event include thousands of officers, rooftop snipers, and anti-drone operations.
Pope Leo XIV was elected as the 267th pope following a conclave that lasted less than 24 hours. He succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025. The new pontiff faces challenges, including addressing the fallout from clerical abuse scandals while striving to adapt the Church to modernity.
The inauguration will include a procession to the tomb of Saint Peter, where Pope Leo XIV will receive the papal emblems, including the pallium and the fisherman’s ring, which symbolizes his authority.
As the ceremony unfolds, large screens will display the proceedings for the gathered crowds. The pope will also greet delegations from various countries, though it’s unclear if any will have private audiences with him.
This moment marks a historic chapter for the Catholic Church, as Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy amid global anticipation and hope for renewal.
