The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a warning that heavy flooding will affect 198 local government areas across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory from August 7 to 21, 2025. This alert follows substantial rainfall that has already impacted various regions, including Lagos.
The agency categorized flood risk levels as Very High, High, and Moderate, depending on local conditions. Over 832 communities are at risk, with disruptions expected on more than 100 major transportation routes.
NiHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency response agencies. He emphasized the need for state and local governments to take proactive measures to mitigate risks.
In Lagos, recent torrential rain caused significant flooding, particularly in Ikorodu. The state government is assessing the damage and planning humanitarian interventions for affected residents. Concerns were raised regarding the adequacy of the government’s response to the situation, with calls for compassion and actionable solutions for those displaced.
The floods have also severely impacted local fish farmers, with losses estimated at over N150 million due to washed-away stock. As the situation develops, citizens are encouraged to stay informed through NiHSA’s official channels and their local emergency management agencies.
