Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have attacked a mosque in Dadinkowa community, Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing four worshippers and injuring five others.
The attackers reportedly stormed the mosque on Wednesday evening while congregants were observing prayers, opening fire on them.
The assault is believed to be a reprisal for a recent military operation that foiled an ambush earlier in the week. Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA had reportedly neutralised five suspected Lakurawa members near Mayama Hill during an attempted attack on a military convoy.
The convoy was said to be carrying the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division during an operational tour of the state. Following the encounter, security operatives recovered weapons, ammunition, cash, mobile phones, and motorcycles from the suspects.
Security authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the mosque attack.
They assured residents that operations have been intensified to restore calm in the area.
The injured victims were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The incident adds to growing concerns about Lakurawa activities in the north-west region. On February 20, suspected members of the group reportedly killed at least 33 residents in multiple attacks on communities in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State after allegedly attempting to rustle cattle.
