Gunmen have shot and killed Aondoakaa Yaiyol, the former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.
Yaiyol, who was also the Commander of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services, was attacked on Friday night. This tragic event follows the death of his wife under similar circumstances last year, after which their home was burned.
Tim Nyior, the PDP state publicity secretary, confirmed Yaiyol’s assassination in a phone call on Saturday. He stated, “It’s true that he was once the PDP chairman in Tarka before taking on his role with the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services.”
Chief Joseph Har, the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security and Internal Affairs, described the incident as an assassination. He detailed that the assailants arrived on motorcycles, shot Yaiyol at close range, and then fired into the air to disperse onlookers before fleeing in vehicles.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the assailant was previously incarcerated for the murder of Yaiyol’s wife and had been pursuing him since being released.
DSP Udeme Edet, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and stated that police are actively searching for the suspect, who managed to escape before officers could apprehend him. Edet assured that the suspect would soon be caught.
