Gunmen have reportedly assassinated Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, the parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church in Eha-Ndiagu, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. The incident occurred on the evening of September 20, 2025, as he was returning to his parish.

According to community sources, the assailants, who were riding motorcycles, intercepted Fr. Eya’s vehicle along the Eha-Ndiagu road. They deflated the tyres, forcing the car to stop, before shooting him multiple times at close range.

Another occupant in the vehicle was unharmed, while the attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Fr. Eya was originally from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Enugu State Police Command or the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka regarding the assassination.
