Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has engaged the services of 1,600 watchmen to bolster security in secondary schools across the state. This decision follows a deadly attack on a government girls’ school in Kebbi State, where the vice principal was killed and 25 students were abducted.

During a ceremony to distribute permanent and pensionable appointment letters to the newly recruited watchmen and 400 mathematics teachers, Governor Yusuf emphasized that ensuring a secure environment for students, teachers, and school facilities is a top priority for his administration. He noted that learning cannot thrive where safety is compromised.

In a statement made by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, Governor Yusuf described the deployment as a significant step toward restoring safety and stability in public schools. The watchmen will play a crucial role in safeguarding school premises, monitoring unauthorized activities, and supporting the smooth operation of academic activities.

The governor urged the newly appointed watchmen to fulfill their duties with vigilance, discipline, and integrity. He also highlighted the recruitment of 400 mathematics teachers, addressing gaps in student performance and readiness for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Governor Yusuf reiterated that mathematics serves as a foundation for innovation and that building strong competencies in this area is essential for competing in a knowledge-driven world. He expressed confidence that the new teachers would significantly enhance teaching quality and strengthen students’ pathways to STEM fields.

He commended the Ministry of Education and the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board for conducting a transparent recruitment process and encouraged the new teachers to teach with passion and professionalism, ensuring they justify the trust placed in them.
