Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his commitment to implementing the Supreme Court’s verdict that nullified the local government elections held in October 2024. In a statewide broadcast on March 2, 2025, he expressed disagreement with the court’s ruling but affirmed the government’s obligation to comply.
In his address, Governor Fubara stated, “Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government.” He emphasized his administration’s adherence to constitutional governance and due process.
Upon receiving certified copies of the judgments, Fubara indicated that the state government would analyze their implications and implement them promptly. He directed the Heads of Local Government Administration to take over the management of the 23 local government areas until fresh elections are conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.
Additionally, the governor instructed outgoing local government chairmen to formally hand over their duties by March 3, 2025, urging citizens to remain calm during this transition.
The Supreme Court’s ruling also included a restriction on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other government agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State Government until compliance with prior court orders, which the government has allegedly ignored.
Moreover, the court dismissed a cross-appeal from Governor Fubara regarding the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly, directing elected lawmakers to resume their duties immediately. The ruling criticized the governor for sidelining a significant number of constituencies and for actions deemed authoritarian, including the demolition of the Assembly complex.
The Supreme Court’s judgment highlighted serious violations of the Electoral Act during the October 2024 local government elections, leading to the ruling that the election process was void due to non-compliance with electoral guidelines.
