Two people have reportedly died while several others were injured following a fireworks explosion during a Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident occurred near the main stage of the event when fireworks allegedly packed in cartons exploded suddenly, causing panic as guests fled the venue for safety.
An eyewitness said one of the victims, identified simply as Ugochi, died instantly, while another person was rushed to a nearby hospital where she later died. Several others sustained severe burns and deep cuts.
A video circulating online showed thick smoke filling the venue as injured victims were evacuated to hospitals for urgent medical attention.
It was recalled that before Christmas, the Anambra State Police Command had banned the use of knockouts and other explosives during festivities, warning that strict measures would be enforced to prevent such incidents.
