On Saturday, a fire broke out at a property in Abuja believed to be owned by former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima. The incident occurred at No. 13 Nelson Mandela Street, Asokoro, in the Federal Capital Territory, where four out of five blocks of three-bedroom flats were destroyed.
Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs of the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD), confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that it was reported around 1 p.m. Fortunately, no lives were lost; however, the fire resulted in the destruction of household items, including furniture, clothing, foodstuffs, and other personal effects belonging to the occupants.
Viral videos on social media, including one shared by Northern Trends on Instagram, showed thick smoke and raging flames engulfing the building as firefighters battled to contain the spread. Personnel from FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the FCT Police Command responded promptly to the scene.
Preliminary observations suggest that the fire may have started from the solar power installations.
