The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has urged Nigerians to come together to combat false narratives and misinformation that threaten the nation’s unity. This statement was made during a visit from a delegation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Olufemi Peters.

Idris emphasized the collective responsibility of Nigerians to project the truth and enhance the country’s image, warning that misinformation can divide nations. He stated that the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, is committed to advancing media and information literacy to promote truth, unity, and national development.

He praised NOUN for its excellence in open distance learning and for hosting the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), which aims to establish Nigeria as a leader in media education. The certification for IMILI will take place in November 2025 during the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Peters expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s support, including a ₦250 million grant for the Institute’s development. He reaffirmed NOUN’s commitment to ensuring IMILI’s success and international recognition, which will enhance Nigeria’s reputation in education and media literacy.

Idris concluded by highlighting that IMILI aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to promote integrity, accountability, and public enlightenment.
