The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated N50 billion to settle earned allowances for academic and non-academic staff of federal universities. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, on April 23, 2025, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the education sector.

In a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Ministry of Education, it was emphasized that this funding reflects the government’s dedication to transforming Nigeria from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based one. The Minister highlighted that prioritizing the welfare of university staff is crucial for nurturing the potential of Nigerian youth.

Dr. Alausa acknowledged the trust that academic unions have placed in the administration, which has contributed to a stable academic environment in recent times. He reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to resolving the issues that have historically plagued university institutions, stating that keeping children in school is paramount.

This funding marks a significant step towards addressing the grievances of university staff, who have previously faced challenges regarding unpaid allowances.
