In response to the increasing frequency of boat accidents on Nigeria’s waterways, the federal government has established a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps. The committee was inaugurated by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who underscored the importance of ensuring safety on the country’s waterways, which are vital for economic and commercial activities.

“The task ahead is challenging, but with commitment, we can eliminate boat mishaps and ensure that our waterways remain safe and navigable for future generations,” Oyetola stated during the inauguration in Abuja.

The committee, led by Bola Oyebamiji, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), includes representatives from state governments, boat operators, marine safety experts, and academics. Its primary mandate is to conduct a thorough review of commercial boat operations, identify the underlying causes of accidents, and propose sustainable solutions to enhance safety.

Oyebamiji assured the Minister that the committee would work diligently to improve safety and operational standards across Nigeria’s waterways. The committee has been given a timeline of six weeks to complete its review and submit a detailed report with its recommendations.

The establishment of this committee reflects the government’s commitment to addressing safety concerns in the maritime sector and improving the overall regulation of boat operations across the country.
