The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the creation of the National Council on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. This new council will guide humanitarian activities and will be overseen by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, announced this decision during a media briefing aimed at addressing the humanitarian challenges arising from the partial suspension of World Food Programme operations in parts of Nigeria. He emphasized that the council’s establishment will enable the development of national programs and enhance coordination between various levels of government.
The minister noted that President Bola Tinubu has lifted the suspension on the ministry’s account following a scandal involving the diversion of funds intended for vulnerable groups. This situation led to the recovery of $24 million and the identification of over 50 suspicious bank accounts under the former minister.
Dr. Sununu highlighted the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency in the administration of humanitarian programs, aiming to make a significant impact in addressing poverty and humanitarian issues in Nigeria.
