The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has announced a salary increase for the 459 judges serving in the state’s 153 customary courts. This decision was communicated by Dr. Reuben Onyishi, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, in a statement issued on Monday.

The new salary structure will take effect from January, aligning with the newly established minimum wage of ₦80,000 in Enugu State. This adjustment comes in response to the rising cost of living and follows the recent national minimum wage increase from ₦70,000.

Onyishi noted that the salary review was prompted by a memo dated November 25, 2024, from Mr. Osinachi Nnajieze, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Legal Matters.

In response, Governor Mbah approved the changes, which will also benefit the chairpersons and two members of each customary court. The salary for court chairpersons will increase from ₦42,989.76 to ₦92,989.76, while the salaries for the two members will rise from ₦39,736.18 to ₦89,736.18.

According to the statement, the salary adjustment reflects the governor’s commitment to improving judicial services in the state.
