Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has reappeared before the Federal High Court for the continuation of proceedings in his ongoing trial over alleged financial misconduct.
The resumption of trial follows his temporary release by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which reportedly granted him leave on compassionate grounds to attend the funeral of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo.
Court proceedings resumed under heightened but orderly security presence, with officials maintaining strict control of access to the court premises. However, the ICPC has not publicly disclosed the specific terms or conditions attached to the temporary release.
At the time of reporting, there remains uncertainty regarding El-Rufai’s custodial status. It is unclear whether he will continue on bail or be remanded pending further judicial determinations.
The case continues to raise procedural questions around the scope of compassionate release within Nigeria’s criminal justice system, particularly in matters involving high-profile defendants facing corruption-related charges.
