Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has lifted a five-year employment embargo and approved the recruitment of 1,000 indigenes into the state civil service. This decision, effective from November 1, 2024, includes a new minimum wage of N80,000 for workers.
The announcement has been met with widespread jubilation, particularly among job seekers who have eagerly awaited employment opportunities. The Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission, in a letter dated March 4, 2025, confirmed the recruitment process, which has attracted over 10,000 applications for various roles, from clerical positions to officer cadre.
Mr. Perekiye Buruboyefe, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, assured applicants that the recruitment would be conducted transparently, with screening tests and interviews in place to select the most qualified candidates. He praised Governor Diri’s initiative as a significant step towards empowering the people of Bayelsa.
This move is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy by reducing unemployment and potentially steering young people away from criminal activities through productive engagement. The last major recruitment in the Bayelsa civil service occurred in 2019, under former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson.
