Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South in the National Assembly, has announced his imminent defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The move is scheduled to take place on June 12.

Speaking during an event in Benin to mark his second year in office, Imasuen—who also chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions—said internal conflicts within the Labour Party were hindering his ability to deliver on campaign promises.

“This decision is not out of opportunism,” he clarified. “It is a strategic move to align Edo South with the federal government’s development agenda, especially under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope initiative.”

Imasuen outlined his legislative and constituency achievements, including the successful passage of the Federal College of Education, Abudu (Establishment) Bill, resolution of over 20 public petitions nationwide, and several grassroots-focused initiatives.

Among the projects highlighted were agricultural training programs, scholarships for local students, support for vocational education, and health interventions such as the training of traditional birth attendants.

He emphasized the importance of agriculture in his district, noting successes in boosting productivity in rubber, cocoa, and cashew farming through modernized techniques and tool support.

“Farmers in Edo South are already seeing significant improvements in yield,” he said.

The senator also urged greater collaboration from local government bodies to sustain development projects, while pledging continued focus on health, youth empowerment, and rural advancement.

Imasuen’s defection adds to the ongoing wave of political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s next general election cycle.
