The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has strongly condemned the recent wave of violence in Benue State, particularly the killings in Yelwata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 people were reportedly killed in a two-day attack by suspected herders.

In a statement released on Monday, NARD President Dr. Tope Osundara expressed deep concern over the strain such violence has imposed on an already fragile healthcare system. The association also highlighted the broader impact of violence in other troubled regions like Katsina and Zamfara.

Dr. Osundara noted that health professionals have been directly affected, with the death of a young pharmacist, Matthew Lormba, serving as a tragic example. “The killing of promising young Pharmacist Matthew Lormba is a stark reminder that health workers are now an endangered species in Benue and beyond,” he said.

He warned that the increasing threat to healthcare workers has led to growing absenteeism in primary healthcare facilities and declining access to essential services, especially in underserved communities. “This does not align with the goals of universal health coverage,” he added.

Beyond the immediate health implications, NARD pointed to the potential for a humanitarian crisis, mental health strain among health workers, and broader socio-economic fallout including disruptions to agriculture and food supply, which may worsen malnutrition among children.

Over 10,000 Nigerians have lost their lives to violence in the last two years, Dr. Osundara revealed, noting the impact this has had on displacement, education, and livelihoods.

He urged federal and state governments to urgently implement practical and long-lasting security solutions, particularly in Nigeria’s North Central and North East regions. “There must be an immediate stop to the nationwide bloodshed to avert a looming disaster,” he said.

NARD extended condolences to the families of victims and called for swift and decisive action to halt the cycle of violence and protect both citizens and healthcare providers.
