Veteran journalist Dele Momodu has expressed full support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, cautioning President Bola Tinubu against jeopardizing Nigeria’s democracy in his pursuit of a second term. Speaking on ARISE News, Momodu reminded Tinubu of his pro-democracy roots and warned that prioritizing political ambition over national interest could tarnish his legacy.
Momodu emphasized that Tinubu has already achieved significant milestones that previous leaders like Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola could not attain. He cautioned that pursuing a second term “by fire, by force” could undermine these accomplishments. He also criticized the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for its indecision, noting that attempts to sanction or win back aggrieved members came too late.
Regarding the future of the opposition, Momodu revealed that the new ADC coalition, supported by key figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, resulted from over 18 months of planning. Meetings took place in various locations, including London and Morocco, to avoid political sabotage. He stated that the ADC has transitioned from being a “fringe platform” to a significant organizational force for the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu pointed out that concerned Nigerians have reached out to political elders for intervention, expressing disappointment that many in the ruling APC remain unreceptive to wise counsel. He stated, “Some of them are too power-drunk to listen to anybody. But before they collapse our democracy, some people must rise up. That’s what the ADC did today.”
