Kano politics is experiencing fresh tension following reports that Governor Abba Yusuf is considering defecting from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This potential move has met strong opposition from both the party’s leadership and its national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The internal disagreement within the NNPP has intensified, particularly between supporters of the governor and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement, founded by Kwankwaso. In a press statement, the NNPP Chairman for Kano State, Hon. Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, emphasized that the party does not endorse any defection to the APC.

“We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC,” Dungurawa stated. “I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader… do not approve of what is happening.”

Dungurawa urged those considering defection to remain patient and loyal to the NNPP, emphasizing responsibility to the people of Kano State. He also dismissed claims of any plots against Kwankwaso within the party.

The Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, acknowledged the rift within the party but refrained from commenting on the alleged defection, stating that the leadership is addressing the issues internally.

As the situation unfolds, the implications for Kano’s political landscape could be significant, particularly with upcoming elections on the horizon. Dungurawa has called for continued support for the NNPP and its national leader as the party navigates these challenges.
