The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a restraining order against Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, and others, preventing them from protesting in certain areas in Abuja, including Aso Rock Villa, on October 20, 2025. The protests were intended to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Justice Mohammed Umar granted the ex parte motion requested by the police, which also prohibits protesters from gathering near the National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way. The court ordered that the respondents respond to the motion by October 20.
The police filed the motion citing concerns over public order and safety, and the court’s order will remain in effect until the hearing of the motion on notice. Sowore had begun mobilizing for a peaceful protest against Kanu’s detention, which has drawn significant public interest and calls for a political solution to his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism.
