A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of N10 million following his arraignment on cybercrime-related charges.

Justice Musa Liman, while ruling on the bail application on Thursday, ordered Sowore to produce one surety in the same amount, stating that the surety must own verifiable landed property within the Federal Capital Territory. The court also directed the activist to surrender his international passport to the court registrar.

Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, was arraigned by the Nigerian Police Force on Wednesday on a 16-count charge, including cybercrime and defamation. The charges stemmed from a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “illegal” and “incompetent.”

Following a request by Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, to keep him in the custody of his legal team pending the fulfillment of bail conditions, the judge granted the request.

The case has been adjourned until April 8 for further hearing.
